Trigger point injections

Trigger point injections are injections of anesthetic, saline, and/or corticosteroid into painful areas of muscles that aren’t able to relax. These knots of muscles are referred to as trigger points, and they are able to affect other parts of the body.

Where and When are Trigger Point Injections Used?

Trigger point injections can be used to treat painful knots in the neck, arms, lower back, and legs. Individuals with myofascial pain syndrome can also respond positively to trigger point injections.

During a trigger point injection, our performing physicians will ask the patient to sit in a position where the trigger point is easily accessible. If necessary, ultrasound technology can find the area. After the skin is disinfected, our staff member will use a small needle to inject an anesthetic, saline, and/or corticosteroid into a group of muscles that have formed into a painful knot or are just unable to relax. This only takes a few minutes.

Once the injection is complete, the trigger point is inactive and the patient feels immediate relief. For sustained relief, a brief course of treatment is often recommended. Sometimes, patients need several areas injected in one visit.
